Carver collects career-first USCS win at NAS
Tuscumbia, Alabama – August 7, 2009 – Seventeen year-old Rookie point’s leader, Justin Carver from Drummonds, Tennessee charged from his outside front row starting position into the lead in the first turn of the race and led the entire distance on his way to victory lane in the 30-lap Parts Plus United Sprint Car
Series Outlaw Thunder Tour main event at North Alabama Speedway on Friday night. Carver’s battled with veterans Terry Gray and Raymond Stull the entire distance to collect his career-first USCS feature win. The 2008 Rookie of the Year, Anthony Nicholson from Bartlett, Tennessee who won the May 24th USCS Speedweek 2009 Round Two at North Alabama
Speedway started in the K&N filters Pole Position after the evening’s passing points
leader, seven-time series Champion Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee drew a four in the K&N Filters Pole Award inversion drawing
for the top six cars in the feature race. This placed Carver outside the front row beside Nicholson with past series Champion, Marshall Skinner from West Memphis, Arkansas inside row two and Gray in the fourth starting position. July 11th Greenville Speedway feature winner Raymond Stull from Independence, Mississippi would start fifth and Ohio
traveler, Ronnie Blair from Troy, Ohio would start sixth for the feature race.
On the start of the race Carver jumped into the lead in turn one and Gray who started fourth was scored in the runner-up spot at the end of the first lap with Nicholson in third, past series Champion Skinner, trailed in fourth and Stull was in fifth place. Three laps later Blair replaced Skinner in the top five.
After two caution periods for first turn spins and on lap eight, the order in the lead pack changed again as Stull moved past Nicholson into third place behind Carver and Gray. On lap fourteen Nicholson brought out the caution when his rear axle broke and he stopped on the back stretch while he was running in the fourth position. That was the final
caution of the event. Carver led the final sixteen laps with Gray and then a rim-riding Stull who passed Gray for the second position on lap twenty-five applying pressure.
On the final lap as Carver entered turn three Stull raced by him in the low groove for what appeared to be the winning move. Stull’s momentum took him high in turn four and the talented rookie drove back past the veteran charger low in turn four and won the drag race to the $2000 paycheck awaiting him in victory lane.
Hard charging Raymond Stull finished in the runner-up spot a car length back. Current series point’s leader, Terry Gray followed in the third position. Ronnie Blair who started sixth finished in the fourth position. Veteran USCS past Champion, Eddie Gallagher from Piperton, Tennessee rounded out the top five after starting twelfth.
Sixteen year-old Brad Greer from Coulterville, Illinois headed the next group in sixth place followed by two rookies, seventeen-year-old Jon Stinson from Memphis, Tennessee in seventh place and Casey Rowland from Nesbit, Mississippi in eighth position. Sixteen year-old female sprint car hot-shoe, Morgan Turpen from Oakland, Tennessee finished ninth
and fourteen year-old first year sprint car racer, Scott Hensley from Olive Branch, Mississippi rounded out the top ten finishers.
Veteran Terry Gray won the six-lap Parts Plus Power Dash in a photo finish over Terry Gray. Gray also won the 10-lap Engler Machine and Tool First Heat Race. Marshall Skinner raced to victory in the Butlerbuilt Second Heat Race.
Eddie Gallagher garnered the Lunati “Crank It Up” Award for his charge past seven cars in the main event to finish fifth. The RE Technologies Rookie of race honors went to Carver. The event’s Dynotech hard luck award went to Nicholson.
